Eco-tourism Zanzibar – a guide to shopping
Don’t buy large shells, turtle shells, or pieces of coral from street or beach vendors. These are mostly taken from endangered reefs and marine species and buying them actively encourages he destruction of Zanzibar’s ocean fauna.

Assist the local economy by purchasing local products.

Don’t buy pirated music CD’s. African musicians don’t make a lot of money from their craft, and buying pirated music not only takes money from the artists who deserve it, but can be lining the pockets of drug dealers.

We understand that ‘beach boys’ can be very frustrating. Do not encourage them by avoiding purchasing from them or using their services (they often offer tours and transport), as they are usually illegal and unreliable. Only use reputable agencies or official government guides.
